LEARNING CURVES
Can a perky, middle-aged rule-follower once and for all face the demons of her middle school alma mater before the building is razed to the ground?
I grew up just outside of Boston, where I excelled at school and even snagged a few solos in choir.
But the year I turned twelve, everything changed. My beloved older brother left for college. I got my period, braces, lady-sized boobs, and a lot of attention from boys and men around me. I came of age in the shadow of Anita Hill testifying before congress, and my burgeoning sexuality rippled through my family and friends' lives. Then, last year, my older brother invited me back to a kind reunion at our middle school before they tore the building down. "It'll be awesome," he said, in all seriousness. Awesome? As I came of age, I was -- over-eager, boy-crazy, awkward -- anything but awesome. This invitation made me wonder, are there lessons to be learned by revisiting the people, places, and the past that shaped me? |
