LEARNING CURVES
Can a perky, middle-aged rule-follower once and for all face the demons of her middle school alma mater before the building is razed to the ground?
I grew up just outside of Boston, where I excelled at school and even snagged a few solos in choir.
But the year I turned twelve, everything changed. My beloved older brother left for college. I got my period, braces, lady-sized boobs, and a lot of attention from boys and men around me. I was coming of age in the shadow of Anita Hill testifying before congress, and my burgeoning sexuality seemed to ripple through my family and friends' lives. Life marches on. I moved to NYC and chalked up those years to, you know, a typical adolescence. Then, last year, my older brother invited me back to a kind reunion at our middle school before they tore the building down. "It'll be awesome," he said, in all seriousness. Awesome? My coming of age wasn't awesome. But, maybe this invitation was my last chance to revisit the past, people, and places, that shaped me. |
